Big news arrives on El Muerto, the announced film about the Marvel character of the same name that will soon enrich the Sony Spider-Man's Universe.

The screenplay for the film is currently being written by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer, who is already working on the highly anticipated DC Blue Beetle cinecomic. Further details on the cast of the film have not yet been revealed, whose only announced name currently remains that of Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, the stage name of Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, in the lead role. El Muerto's big screen debut will also feature the first time for Latin character in the lead role in a Marvel-owned film.

Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez, otherwise known as El Muerto, is a Mexican wrestler who gains mystical powers thanks to a luchador mask handed down for generations in his family. After the deity known as el Dorado kills his father, the young man embarks on a 10-year wandering in order to learn various fighting styles to prove to the deity that he is worthy of his powers, on pain of death. El Muerto will then clash with Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match in New York, organized by J. Jonah Jameson in order to finally expose the hero.

It will be to be seen if the film will faithfully reproduce this storyline, however, in the last few hours, important news has emerged, with Sony Pictures has finally revealed the name of the director appointed to take the reins of the film. This is Jonás Cuarón, son of the well-known Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón.

The young son of art made his directorial debut in 2015 with Desierto, an immigration-themed thriller, which featured in the cast such names as Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Jonás Cuarón also joined his father in writing Gravity, the acclaimed seven-time Oscar-winning film in 2013.

El Muerto is expected in cinemas on January 12, 2024.
